MISSION TRIP FOR YOUTH GRADES  9 – 12
Lake Traverse Reservation (Sisseton)

7/22/2012 to 7/27/2012

Congratulations to the nine youth from Faith Reformed Church who accepted the call to serve our Lord at Lake Traverse Indian Reservation, South Dakota the week of July 22-27, 2012. They will be serving through YouthWorks with other youth from Orion IL, Princeton IL and Salina KS.

We trust God will work powerfully to create life changes in the lives of every one that participates in the mission trip. We believe that God is going to do amazing things through them as they serve the community of Lake Traverse Reservation.

By participating in the mission trip our youth will:

  • Be challenged to follow Jesus through services that will develop them.
  • Deepen their knowledge of God’s Word and grow closer to God.
  • Come to know the blessing of giving their lives away in service to Jesus and the satisfaction that result.

The mission trip through Youthworks is a good fit for our youth. We can reach the reservation in approximately 8 hours of driving, eliminating hotel and meal expenses and two extra days of travel. Faith Reformed Church went with Youth Works in 2010 and was impressed with the way they provide life-changing, Christ centered youth mission opportunities. By crossing borders of race and culture, and by placing students outside their comfort zones, we find something amazing happens; God gets their attention without the distractions of everyday life. Youthworks primary work is ministry. The “works” in their name are the “works” God will do in our hearts and lives if we allow it.

An attempt will be made by the youth and their parents to raise all the funds required to pay for the trip with fundraisers. The following are being planned:

  • Chili cook off / baskets . . . . . . . . . . Feb 26, 2012
  • Rummage sale  . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .March 23, 2012
  • Brat Sale . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .  June 9, 2012
The youth are ready and excited about serving with the love of Christ. We ask that you support them, first through daily prayer, and second by supporting their fund raisers.

Lake Traverse Reservation (Sisseton)
The prairies, hills and valleys of the Lake Traverse Reservation in northeastern South Dakota offer opportunities to camp, hunt and fish. Not only will your group enjoy the natural beauty of the region, but you’ll also experience the culture and strength of the people of the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux tribe. Many tribe members, however, struggle with poverty and unemployment. You will have opportunities to serve the community through work projects and children’s programs that will encourage the Sioux people.

Demographics:  The Lake Traverse Reservation covers an area of over 400 square miles within six counties in South Dakota. The Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux tribe has a population of 10,922. Many of the tribal members were relocated to the reservation after Little Crow's War in Minnesota during the 1860s. The original reservation was greatly reduced to its present size through subsequent homestead acts to provide land for non-Indian settlers. YouthWorks will serve on the reservation, particularly in the community of Sisseton. Like many Native American regions today, this community struggles with poverty and unemployment. The current unemployment rate is 59% on the reservation. The need for jobs will only continue to grow as nearly 30% of the population is under age 18. The community plans to develop natural and cultural resources to preserve and strengthen the economy on the reservation. Come to the Lake Traverse Reservation to learn from tribal members as you help meet their needs in the name of Jesus Christ.

About the Ministry:  Participants serve in a variety of ways during a YouthWorks mission trip. Students will switch between sites during the week. Examples of service sites that your students may participate at are Kids Club and Work Projects. Kids Club is a hands-on program led by your youth offering high-energy games, crafts, skits, songs and interactive lessons all designed to help kids learn about Jesus. Work projects may include painting houses, performing minor home repair, cleaning up debris, volunteering in community gardens or other projects in the community. They are all blessings to the community and people in need. We cannot confirm until all groups arrive exactly what service opportunities your students will be a part of during the week. We ask that you come with a willing and flexible spirit!

Activities:  Evening activities during a YouthWorks week are designed to give participants insight into the lives of local residents and the culture of the area. Below is a list of possible evening/cultural activities: attend a performance by the Sisseton-Wahpeton Dakota Dance Troop; go on a prayer hike through the Sica Hollow Walk; participate in a community educational activity; attend a community cookout. These are examples of what your group might partake in during your mission week. These examples are subject to change due to weather or availability. In case of change, suitable substitutes will be provided. We try to arrange for free evening activities, but from time to time, an additional cost may be required for an activity. Please plan to bring an additional $10 per person to cover any extra costs. We will confirm the details closer to your trip.

Ministry Week:  Kids Club and Work Projects (including house painting and community projects). There is a two day rotation of assignments.

We all need to be thinking “Missional” following our church mission statement. Meaning, we the adults and the youth are in mission work at, and around our church, as well as away-in missions.

It is very important you register by December 16th to guarantee an available spot. After that date you will be able to register only if spots are available.

An attempt will be made to raise all the funds required with fundraisers. All funds, less 10%, raised through fund raisers will be prorated to the participants that work on the fund raiser. The 10% will be earmarked toward the cost of transportation and meals to and from the site. The mission trip coordinator will keep track of the amount credited to each participant.

We are requesting all participants and their parents work at the following fundraisers,

  • Chili cook off / baskets . . . . . . . . . . Feb 26, 2012
  • Rummage sale  . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .March 23, 2012
  • Brat Sale . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .  June 9, 2012

All donations made specifically to an individual will be credited in his or her name.

Each participant will be required to attend scheduled preparation sessions. The sessions will include instruction in team work, servant hood, expectations, understanding, attitude and action. Sessions will be given by the group leaders. We will meet in earlier January to set up dates and times for preparation sessions and to prepare for the fund raisers.

If you have any questions regarding your mission trip please contact me at 715-572-6133 or email me at dokester@wctc.net.

I look forward to serving with you next summer.
